Beginning January 1, 2012 the state of Tennessee will require registered voters to present a Government issued photo ID in order to vote. Qualifying documents include:
• Tennessee driver’s license with your photo
• United States Passport
• Department of Safety photo ID
• Photo ID issued by the federal or state government
• United States Military photo ID
• Gun permit card with your photo
For more information, refer to this fact sheet from the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office.
If you do not have a valid photo ID meeting these requirements, you can go to any Driver Service Center Location to get one. Also, the state will waive any fees if you are unable to afford one.
In order to receive a state issued ID, applicants must provide primary and secondary proof of identity and two proofs of residency.
If you are over the age of 65 and vote absentee, or meet the following conditions, a photo ID may not be required to vote.
• Voters who vote absentee by mail
• Voters who are residents in a licensed nursing home – voting at the facility.
• Voters who are hospitalized
If you do not have a photo ID in time for election day you can still vote. Your polling place will provide you with a provisional ballot. You will have 2 business days after the election to provide the appropriate photo ID to the Election Commission.
If you need assistance meeting any of these requirements please go to our Contact Page and put voter registration in the subject field.
